Drumming is one of the oldest ways humans have entertained themselves. It is also one of the oldest tools employed for prayer and communication. There is something about drumming that opens you. The drum opens places in your being that our Western religious traditions and modern industrial culture has slammed shut for many reasons. Drumming works on everyone, but in different ways. There is no right or wrong way to drum.
It has also been proven that drumming synchronizes the frequencies in the left and right brain hemispheres, prompting the relaxation response. This state of focus or meditation brings balance to the body which can promote healing. Community drumming has been consistently proven to reduce stress, create a strong sense of community (even among strangers), and produce a profound relaxation of both the mind and body. Those who drum or simply listen to the rhythms around them can benefit from deep relaxation. Drumming also creates the environment where prayer, meditation, and self-healing can be experienced.
We will begin each session with a brief introduction of a theme or topic. With that theme in mind we will begin the first drum segment, including some instruction of basic techniques, followed by some teaching and discussion on the theme. We will end each session with another drum jam.
